A Duty of Memory - My Quest: A Journey of Remembrance and Gratitude

This book began as a search — not only for history, but for meaning. My father, a young American pilot, gave his life over Normandy in 1944 during WWII. For years, his story lived in fragments: a photograph on our wall, a memory carried quietly through generations. I felt a duty to gather those fragments, to walk the ground where he fell, and to meet the people who never forgot him. In 1994, fifty years after the liberation of Normandy, my wife, Ann, and I traveled to France to honor his memory. Two years later, we returned to Cherbourg-Octeville in Normandy, where the kindness of the Launey family and the people of Cherbourg showed us how deeply remembrance endures. Those visits became more than pilgrimages — they were bridges between past and present, between sacrifice and gratitude. Writing this book helped me find peace. Each story, each photograph, each encounter brought me closer to understanding not only my father’s legacy, but the meaning of remembrance itself. What began as grief became connection — and connection became gratitude. What I discovered was more than history. It was humanity — expressed in the reverence of ceremonies, in the quiet dignity of those who remember, and in the enduring gratitude of a nation that never forgot its liberators. This memoir is written in gratitude to the families, veterans, and citizens who keep memory alive — and to my father, whose courage continues to guide me. ADutyofMemory–MyQuest is both a pilgrimage and a promise: that we will remember, and that remembrance itself is an act of love.
